My company issued these OtterBox holsters with our new Blackberry smart-phones. The actual case is a typical OtterBox. A hard plastic clam-shell housing with a silicon cover. The case is great and gives the phone superior protection when dropped. This protection is vital as your phone is going to hit the ground a LOT due to the poor design of the belt holster.
This is not the Otter holsters I've seen before where the phone sits down in a half pocket which holds it securely. The new design has the phone "sit" in a shelf like cup at the bottom and pivot into the holster, being secured by a pair of tabs which lightly snap into a couple of shallow indention on the sides of the phone case. This presents several problems:
-holding strength is generally poor, requiring only a light push away from the body to pop the phone out of the holster.
-if the phone isn't sitting squarely in the cup, the "fit" of the holding tabs is worse, making it even easier to pop out.
-when snapping the phone back into the holster, loose clothing can slip between the phone and holster without noticing, making it easier to pop out.
-"love handles" could pop it free.
-over time, as the holding tabs and indention wear, holding power is bound to suffer.
Times when I almost lost my phone because it came out of the holster:
-bumping a side view mirror in a parking lot
-bumping it with my elbow
-carrying a small ladder
-running while working the sideline chains for my son's football game.
-swinging my arms while walking.
Another problem (in my opinion) that is typical of "Otters" is that the keyboard is protected by a substantial ridge on the right and left, making the side-most keys fairly difficult to operate, causing frequent typos.
My nightmare scenario was for my phone to hit the ground in a crowd, when noise levels were high, or when I was on a soft surface (grass, dirt, thick carpet) when I couldn't hear it hit the ground.
My solution was to ditch this case/holster combo before I ended up having to replace my phone via a payroll deduction. I've chosen the ballistic nylon case with a Velcro flap cover manufactured by Nite-ize Nite Ize BlackBerry Hard Shell Case and a thermoplastic (not silicon) bumper (which fits nicely inside the nylon case)Light Blue Gel Skin Cover Ultra Guard Thermoplastic Case for BlackBerry Bold 9700. Both of these items are available through, and I've purchased from Amazon. I'm much happier with this arrangement, the phone has superior protection while in the holster, the camera isn't covered by a hazy plastic cover, and there is ZERO chance of it EVER falling off my hip.

Otterbox makes the best phone cases by far. The Defender is their top protective case. I have their Commuter model for another one of my phone. Nice case too but I wanted something with a little more protection. And it was a good thing I got it. I dropped my phone twice in a day. It slid across a cement sidewalk and the case fully protected it. I got a couple of nicks on the case and nothing else. It may be a little bulky but it's better than a busted phone. Get it. You won't regret it.

Nice case, terrible belt clip. The slightest bump results in the loss of the case and device. Seeing similar complaints, it's a wonder Otterbox hasn't improved this system.
