The Otterbox Defender Jan 16, 2010
By Jerry Conaway I purchased a new smart phone about six months ago, and since that time, i've been carrying it around in a leather pouch attached to my belt. Now this is all fine and good when the phone is not use. However, when it's out of the pouch, it is vulnerable to scratches, dirt and dust, and drops.
I went to Amazon.com and looked up cases for my particular phone model (Nokia e71x) and found the Otterbox Defender. It looked cool in the photos; a case that would enclose the entire phone with three layers of protection and keep it looking like new. The price was a bit steep, but I decided to go ahead and order it anyway.
When the unit came, I found that indeed the case did offer three layers of protection. The first layer is a plastic piece that wraps around the phone and covers the keyboard. The second layer is a hard plastic shell that fits in two pieces over the phone, one in the back of the phone, the other over the face. The plastic shell also contains a clear screen protector, and has holes in the appropriate places so that you can access your charge port, memory slot, usb, and so forth.
The third layer consists of a slick rubber prophylactic that fits none-too-snugly over the plastic shell. There are slots in the shell where certain pieces of the rubber cover will latch into. The rubber cover has movable plugs for the earphone jack and charging port. Finally, there is a plastic snap-in carrier that you can hook to your belt for carrying convenience.
Just as advertised, once assembled, the Otterbox Defender protects your phone from scratches, dents, shocks and falls. Save for the port openings, the phone is totally encased, and asides from purposely slamming the phone to the ground and jumping on it, or running over it with a car, I can't see how a phone might be damaged from a single incident involving this case. However, there are a few drawbacks.
The plastic covering over the keyboard reduces the tactile feel of the board, but this is quite negligible and easily overcome after you get used to it. The bulk of the phone (but not the weight) is greatly increased by the case, but this is also not a real problem, except for around the keys on the outer edge of this keyboard. The raised surface of the case makes these keys a little harder to get to, but it also increased protection for the keyboard, ensuring that keys can't be pressed by accident when the phone is in your pocket or lying on a flat surface.
Now there are three major problems that I see with this case. Number one is the lack of latching mechanisms on the plastic case. Without the outer rubber covering, this thing barely will hold the two halves of the plastic shell together. Several times, I've thought about using Elmer's white glue to glue the pieces shut. Number two is the "adhesion value" of the outer rubber case. This thing is a dust and dirt magnet. Dirt, dust, cat hair, carpet fuzz - you name it, I've found it stuck to the case. The rubber's consistency is almost like velvet or suede. And, since it attracts dust on the outside, it also translates that dust to the inside. I have to take the case apart and clean the entire phone at least once a week. The third caveat is the price. The phone lists on the Otterbox site for almost $50. I got it on Amazon.com for $36, minus shipping. This is pricey, even for an armored case, and I doubt that if I had to get another case that I would be willing to pay that price.
One last bad that i'm willing to write off as partially my fault: The clip that the phone and case seats in has two fingers that latch onto each side of the phone. If the phone is seated properly, then it should not fall out, even with a bit of jostling. However, about ten minutes after I put the phone in the case (and for the first time since I had purchased the phone), I brushed up against a door-knob and the phone ejected from the case and bounced about a foot off the floor. It was a good test of the cases abilities, but I really didn't want to test it that way! In my opine, the clip could use at least one more hook-in point to make the phone a bit more secure.
Anyway, overall I'm fairly satisfied with the Otterbox Defender case. It does the job of protecting the phone in the way that is most important - that is preventing damage from shocks and drops. There are cheaper options, such as the Otterbox Commuter, but it just doesn't look as sturdy, or as cool, as the Defender.
Otterbox Defender Phone Case
+William Adama - Bulks up the phone, gives it total protection from drops, shocks, and most scratches, protects keyboard and screen.
- Gaius Baltar - Not waterproof, dust-proof, poorly held together, pricey.

If you need maximum protection Dec 22, 2009

Pros: Protects screen and camera with hard clear plastic, not just a stick on screen protector. Film over front keys to keep water drops and dust out. Fully enclosing hard shell wrapped in rubber. Phone clips facing in or out when in belt holster.
Cons: Increases bulk substantially. Hard to access some of the side ports because they become sunken in with the case on (all normally flush buttons or ports are now sunken in.) Film over front buttons reduces tactile feel. (The film is not required to use the rest of the case.) Expensive.
Conclusion: This case is not for everyone, if you only need mild protection look at the rest of the Otterbox line. However as far as I know this is the most protective case on the market for this phone and peace of mind is easily worth the premium price and increased bulk.

My OtterBox Mar 22, 2010
By Antonio Lea I have to admit, the reason I bought this product was to see if it really works. I haven't dropped it, bumped into anything or scratched it. I would recommend this to anyone who's willing to take a chance on a reliable product.
