Works great for me... I love this thing! Dec 02, 2010
By A. Mendez Okay - so let me preface my review by saying I own both the original RedEye dock and the RedEye Mini and I also own a Harmony remote control (which I never use anymore).
For me the Mini has been great.
I didn't have any issues with setting it up. But maybe that's because I already owned the dock and took the time to learn how to use that when I bought it. But I never had trouble setting up the dock unit either.
There are videos on their website if you have trouble though.
WARNING: If you don't know how to use the basic menus and features on your Apple device - then it's safe to assume that this product (or any other for that matter) is not for you. Sorry. (I don't know why people buy technology they won't take the time to learn to use.)
The best thing about it? Honestly? I have setup the TV's at the gym on my Mini. So yeah, I can change the channels on the wall-mounted TVs when I'm training (the treadmills have TV's, but I don't really look down at them when I'm running).
I've also configured the TVs in restaurants to mess with the staff. Totally childish- but I've done it. So yeah - I love this thing.
Okay on a more serious note...
PROS: The app is free - so every time they add features - I get them - for free. Like when the channel guide came out... I really like the channel guide feature. A LOT. I tend to use the closed captioning - so don't have to tool around with Comcast's menu covering up the text when I'm watching something. The macro functions work really well and you can actually program custom delays into commands so that the TV (or whatever you're controlling) has time to receive the first command before you send the next one I can keep it with me when I travel. You can hide the toolbars in the app It doesn't drain my battery. They actually have great customer service - they helped me help a buddy of mine setup his Mini. Once it's setup (yes, this actually does take time) you don't really have to do anything else to keep it working. They take feature suggestions and do all their own customer service (you're not calling India to get help). The case has a keyring on it so you can carry it on your keychain (but I don't, I keep it in my purse with my bluetooth headset). The database includes a LOT of codes. Loads. It can "learn" commands if the code isn't in the database for some reason. Case and point I was able to setup the old crusty TV (circa 1993) that I have in the basement using this feature.
CONS: If you're always dropping your Apple device (like most people I know) or have a messed up headphone jack - this thing won't work for you. You can't talk on the phone and keep it connected (not sure why you'd actually WANT to do that on purpose) If you want something you don't actually have to setup - this isn't for you You can't use a computer to set it up (like you can with the more expensive dock unit) It doesn't work with PS3.
Other things to note: I like that it's not cheaply made. It's lightweight - or whatever - but it's not made from thin cheap plastic. It does NOT light up. I've seen images on blogs with the little "R" in blue. It doesn't do that. Setup time could vary greatly... Depending your on how many devices you have. (I configured the device for my downstairs TV, cable box, and DVD -- and customized the buttons in fewer than 20 mins. I can see though - if I tried to go from room to room and do everything in my home at once - that could have been be a big deal time wise. When I set up a device - I don't bother with commands I don't use (like the sleep timer setup on my living room TV - I don't EVER use that downstairs. I do use the sleep timer on in my bedroom TV - so I took the time to figure out how to set that button up properly) When I use it on the go - I'm not really going for a full-tilt setup - just enough to do basic stuff (power, volume, channel changing)

iPhone Software is Terrible Oct 13, 2010
By Jonathan Locke I wanted so much to be a fan boy of both this product and the previous red-eye. It is such a great idea! Unfortunately, my experience is that neither is really ready for prime-time. If you thought that the red-eye mini would fix the problems in the overly-complex original red-eye, think again. Although the hardware is probably more solid, this actually doesn't matter at all because the iPhone app itself is absolutely unworkable. The UI makes it very hard to set up for starters, but if you stick with it for a couple hours you can eventually wade through all that and get to a point that you'd hope you could get to in 10 minutes. The trouble is, once you've invested all this time in setting it up, it then takes ages to start up and crashes CONSTANTLY (to the point where it's not just inconvenient, but actually unusable). Until they do a complete rewrite of that app, I would advise not wasting your time with this product. If I could choose zero stars or negative stars, I would.

Nice gadget. Great options. Mar 11, 2011
By Amida Li I debated buying one of these for a while but finally settled on the RedEye Mini because it has way more options that the alternatives and I figured this would take up less power than some of the other options out there that use the 30-pin connector. The design also really appealed to the minimalist in me. I'm happy I went with this one.
I tried both apps since they're free and you can have both installed at the same time. The 'Mini' app was very easy to setup, as others say and it does what it's supposed to do. But it's not for people who want an activity-based remote.
If you want the full-gusto get the full original version. The range is decent. I'm definitely less than 20 feet from my entertainment center most of the time. Closer to 20 feet or beyond and it doesn't do very well. This is definitely a REAL universal remote control. It seems like they would charge for the more advanced app since it's as capable as a harmony. Love the app on my iPad, the channel guide is FANTASTIC. Really great feature.

Nifty little device. Apr 08, 2011
By J. Barry I needed a universal remote and wanted something decent, convenient and easy to use and heard about this.
I got the package quickly, and was disappointed since I have an iPhone 4 and keep it in an Otterbox Defender case to protect it, it Did Not fit in it's original state; However I was not going to allow this to deter me, about 10 minutes later with a dremel and a bit and it fits and works fine with the case on.
The regular Redeye app was not very pleasant to work with, so I ended up downloading the Redeye Mini app; It has a few bugs and kinks and it takes a few seconds to connect and establish a connection every time it's plugged in and the app is turned on, however I am pleased and would purchase this again.
Pros: Works great when it works; good range; quality seems good and keychain and case seem to hold up well; it's firmware is update-able via the application; Both regular Redeye and the Redeye Mini apps are free; After getting use-to how to select TV codes, it's easy to add and remove them.
Cons: If you use a case, it will require modification to the Redeye Mini and/or the phone's case; Software seems to be a bit buggy but I'm sure this will be remedied in an update.
